In 1972 Alfa Romeo launched the second series of the Giulia model, which consisted mostly on a rationalisation of the model’s range. For this series of the Giulia, a new diesel engine was added to the car’s available options. This signed Alfa Romeo’s first shot at using diesel-powered engines. From 1978, no more Alfa Romeo Giulias were produced, as the company ceased this model’s production run that year.

The second series Giulia could either be powered by 1.3- and 1.6-liter petrol engines or a 1.8-liter diesel engine. The engines are all front-mounted and while the petrol-powered ones were able to produce from approximately 100 to 115 hp, diesel units could not produce more than around 55 hp. The maximum speed that a roadgoing Giulia II could reach was around 120 mi/h (193 km/h). The second series Giulia is driven by its rear wheels and through a 5-speed manual transmission.

Like in the first series Giulia, the second series model remains available only as a 4-door sedan. Its Pininfarina-styled bodywork also remains almost untouched from the first series car. The second series Giulia basically lost its characteristic spine at the centre of the bonnet, which is now flat, and gained a new black front grille made in plastic.

It was actually in 1906, when Milanese aristocrat Cavaliere Ugo Stella and French car manufacturer Alexandre Darracq combined efforts to build an automobile plant, that the Darracq Italiana, former Alfa Romeo company, was established in Naples. Later that year, headquarters of the company were moved to the city of Milan.
