Ferrari is launching at this year's Frankfurt Motor Show the most powerful mid-engine convertible from the brand's history, the
488 Spider. The model is equipped with a 670hp turbocharged V8 engine.
The new Spider is equipped with a retractable hard roof similar to its predecessor, the
458 Spider. However, the company states that the new roof is 25kg lighter and takes only 14 seconds to be opened or closed. When open, the roof is located above the motor area on a flat shape.
With 1420kg, the 488 Spider is slightly heavier, 50kg, than the
488 GTB and, compared to the 458 Spider, it is 10kg lighter.
In terms of design, the 488 Spider has some substantial differences from the coupé version. One of the most significant are the buttresses that are placed behind the two seats. These elements are designed to send the air flow into the engine cover and the air inlets. Another change is the introduction of an adjustable glass which allows to control the circulation of air inside the cabin. This element can be pushed down with the roof on to increase the engine sound inside the vehicle.
The engine on the 488 Spider is the same featured on the 488 GTB. According to Ferrari the model reaches 100km/h in 3.0 seconds and 200km/h in 8.7 seconds. The maximum speed is set at 326km/h.
