Alonso spices up the fight for the title with win in Singapore

Alonso spices up the fight for the title with win in Singapore

Alonso has pulled back to second position in the Formula One World Championship Drivers' standings after he won the Singapore Grand Prix, his second win in a row. The Spaniard was able to hold off Vettel's challenge to win at the Marina Bay circuit and to secure vital points for his title bid.

On the last laps Vettel made a final attempt to take a win in Singapore but the Spaniard defended his position leaving the two Red Bulls on the lower steps of the podium.

This win puts Alonso on an excellent position to fight for the title, but in the same race a driver has suffered a major bump in his chances. Lewis Hamilton failed to finish a grand prix for the second time in-a-row. His team-mate saved McLaren's honour finishing in fourth.

For a second week in-a-row the strategy of pit stops from Red Bull payed-off, this time for Webber. The Aussie saw an opening when the safety car came in on lap three while Tonio Liuzzi's Force India was being taken off the circuit. Webber came into the pits and changed to the harder tyres, running on them untill the end of the race, finishing third. He climbed up the order while the other drivers payed their visits to the boxes.

Webber was also involved in Hamilton's abandon. After the frontrunners made changed the tyres the Red Bull driver got ahead of both McLaren's. Hamilton wanted to fight for the position and was pressing Webber. In one of the attacks the drivers didn't prevent a contact between the both cars, but the results were the opposite. Webber remained intact and with no problem until the end of the race. As for Hamilton he was forced to abandon.

Until the end of the race Button made several efforts to close the gap on Webber, but he wasn't able to do so settling for fourth place, ahead of Mercedes' Nico Rosberg.

In a positive race for Williams, the team got both its drivers in the top ten. Rubens Barrichello was sixth while Hulkenberg was ninth. The drivers were splitted by Renault's Robert Kubica, who made an excellent recovery in the last laps after a puncture, and Force India's Adrian Sutil.

Felipe Massa, who started in last, had a blistering race finishing in the tenth. To do so the Brazilian made an early visit to the pits in lap 2 and continuously climbed positions and beneffited from Kobayashi's and Hamilton's abandons to get to the points.

In the drivers' standings the fight for the title has been spiced up. With his last two victories Alonso is now lying in second position with just eleven points behind Mark Webber. Hamilton has fallen into third place already with a 20-point gap to the leader. Vettel is just one point behind the Brit, with Button lying in fifth with 177 points.

In the manufacturers' standings Red Bull opened a gap to McLaren. They lead with 383 points, more 24 than McLaren. Ferrari is lying third with 316 points.
