Jenson Button handled better the pressure of an aboslutely chaotic Canadian Grand Prix to take his first victory of the season and the second for McLaren. The race which only finished four hours after its start included a red flag, five safety car periods, a penalty and two accidents.
It was only in the final moments of the race that Button got ahead of the world champion. Vettel once again dominated most of the action in the grand prix but in the final lap he committed a driving error which cost him another victory.
Mark Webber was third in Canada ahead of Michael Schumacher and Vitaly Petrov who completed the top five.
The only Ferrari to finish was Felipe Massa who capture sixth place from Sauber's Kamui Kobayashi right on the finish line. The remaining ponctuable positions were filled by Jaime Alguersuari, Rubens Barrichello and Sebastien Buemi.
The race started behind the safety car as the race director felt that the track was too wet for a standing start. The drivers were behind the safety cars until lap 5 when it came in. But he wouldn't stay there for long.
In lap seven after falling behind his team-mate Button, Hamilton was driving quicker and trying to overtake his companion, but Button wouldn't sell his position so cheapily and closed the door. This sent Hamilton to the wall, forcing him to retire and the deployment of the safety car.
The race would be relaunched on lap 12 with Vettel leading ahead of Alonso and Massa. Having pitted for repairs and coming out in 12th Button would then suffer a drive-through penalty for having sped under the safety car, dropping further to 14th.
Vettel continued to dominate extending his lead over Alonso, which seeing that Button was the fastest man on track with intermediates decided to pit for the same tyre option.
Rejoining in eighth ahead of Petrov, the weather wouldn't help the Spaniard as the rain nstarted to fall heavily in Montreal forcing a third safety car deployment. Alonso then decided to pit again for full wets.
Vettel and Webber also pitted for full wets during safety car period and after several other drivers made the same movement Vettel returned to top position ahead of Kamui Kobayashi, who didn't stop and Massa.
With conditions getting worse with every second, as the rain didn't give any truce to the drivers, Vettel told his team on the radio that the conditions were impossible to drive. On lap 25 the race would be interrupted for almost two hours, and when it restarted the safety car came back to action, with full wet weather tyres being mandatory.
The safety car was out for the next nine laps, with Kovalainen retiring during that period, and when it came in Vettel remained as leader, with Kobayashi securing his second position despite the attacks from Massa.
Once again the safety car wouldn't stay there for long. This time it was brought in after the contact between Button and Alonso on Turn 3 that sent the Spaniard out, getting stuck on the kerbs.
After the fourth safety car period Vettel led from Kobayashi, Massa, Heidfeld, Paul di Resta and Webber, with Button dropping down to the bottom of the field.
Deployed again the race restarted with Vettel opening a gap to his opponents with Kobayashi holding back a train of cars. Many positions exchanges took place behind the German, with a touch betwwen Heidfeld and di Resta, the latter having to pit for a new front wing. Heidfeld would then be given a drive-through penalty for overtaking during safety car period.
With 13 laps to go the safety car made his last entrance of the day after Heidfeld crashed out following contact with Kobayashi. His damaged front wing got under his car at speed, which sent him off track, leaving behind some wing debris.
The race would be relaunched with nine laps to go with Vettel being followed by Schumacher, Webber, Button and Kobayashi. Vettel once again managed to open a gap while Schumacher held Button and Webber.
Webber would pass Schumacher with six laps to go but would have to let him pass as he went straight on the chicane. He would repeat the same mistake on the next lap, this time losing his position to Button.
With five laps to go Button would take second place from Schumacher and was now trying to catch Vettel. Behind him Webber finally overtook Schumacher to take third place. In the front Vettel resisted to the pressure of Button until the final lap, when he lost control of his car and let Button through with just a few corners left.
