project Tetsuya Tada says that given his latest car's critical and sales success means that development of a refreshed car and convertible is underway. He also talked about the rumors of a faster version of the car with UK's Autocar and confirmed that the car is under development. However, his team has not decided how to increase the car's performance. Turbocharging, supercharging and a mild hybrid are all on the table, but it seems he is leaning towards a hybrid at the moment.
“We are already working on a mid-life facelift for the car, and we are investigating both turbocharging and supercharging too, But an electric motor assistance solution is also possible, and would bring benefits that forced induction does not," said Tada.
The electric motor would provide a boost to the car's low-rpm torque without affecting its lauded throttle response. The hybrid system would be more for a boost than for electric driving to keep weight down.
“Our TRD tuning department has found it easy to take 100kg (221lbs) out of the curb weight, and have developed certain underbody fins and plates that can be employed to alter the dynamic balance of the car, to increase or reduce oversteer at medium and high speeds. They have quite a pronounced effect,” said Tada.
