Females Now Outnumber Males on American Roads

The number of young people getting their license is also falling

Young female drivers outnumber men overall and in two demographics

Woman now outnumber men on American roads according to a study by the University of Michigan's Transportation Research Institute. It analyzed driver registrations between 1995 and 2010. The institute believes that this is not a blip, and the gap between men and women on American roads will widen.

In 1995, 89.2 million men in the US had licenses compared to 87.4 million women. By 2010, it had flipped to 105.7 million women with licenses and 104.3 million men. Female drivers older than 45 and between 25 and 29 outnumber men in the same demographics.

At the same time, the number of young people in America of both genders is also falling. The number of men between 25 and 29 with licenses fell by 10.6% in the 15 years that were studied and fell by 4.7% for women of the same age.

The study theorizes that the connection afforded by the Internet means that fewer young people are as interested in getting their driver's licenses because they are getting social interaction in other ways. Some metropolitan areas have also been seeing increased riders on their public transit systems.

Young people also do not see the allure in the car that older people had. They grew up in a time when congestion was high. They cannot even dream of working on their own cars anymore because they have become too complicated.
