is still big news in the automotive world. Ford has just unveiled the latest generation online, and it will be a few weeks before anyone in the public actually gets to see it in the metal.
“The visceral look, sound and performance of Mustang resonates with people, even if they’ve never driven one. Mustang is definitely more than just a car – it is the heart and soul of Ford,” said Raj Nair, Ford head of global product development.

was more than adequate when creating the new car. The look is quite similar but with the addition of a new grill shape, new headlight shape and heavily creased and vented hood. In terms of dimensions, the new generation has a lower roof, wider track and more steeply raked windshield.
At the very front, the grill shape of the sixth generation Mustang has been adapted from Ford’s other modern models, just squished. It has the same hexagonal shape as other Fords, but it is shorter and wider than on other cars. The headlights have been reshaped to wrap around the front of the body, unlike previous generations. They also incorporate their LED headlights at the inside corners of the headlights, instead of the outside corners like the current cars. Finally, the hood has a completely different shape that is heavily creased and vented. There are two large creases running towards the windshield near the center of the hood. Close to the fenders, there are two cooling vents in the hood. It looks a little busy in some of the pictures, but it might look great on the road.
In profile, the latest car is all Mustang, and there is no mistaking it for anything else. It has the same long hood and flowing roof shape that has identified the Mustang since the fastbackFord Mustang FastbackUnited States of America, 1965 > present5 photos
was revealed in 1965. The only major change is a crease that runs from behind the front fenders, through the doors stopping briefly at the rear fenders and resuming again at the rear. The line exists to accentuate the rear fenders and make them look more muscular.
The rear of the Mustang gets a major rethink with an all-new shape and design. Of the entire design, it is the most retro part of the sixth generation Mustang. It looks back at the Mustangs of the late 60s with a blacked out rear panel and heavily sculpted, sequential taillights.
Ford promises that a convertible will be added later. It will have a new multilayer, insulated cloth top with better sound deadening, and it can raise and lower twice as fast as the current car.
Ford is keeping details about the interior relatively secret for now. It released an image, which you can view in the gallery but did not give many details. The sixth generation Mustang will be available with Ford’s push-button start, Sync, MyKey and Shaker Pro stereo. The image does make it appear that interior quality has been improved.
Ford has made it no secret that the new Mustang would be sold in Europe, and that means that it must also comply with EU emissions. Therefore, it is adding a new 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine to the Mustang that will be offered worldwide.
Ford is not making any official announcements for the power figures of any of the sixth generation Mustang’s engines yet, but it will include a 5.0-liter V8, 3.7-liter V6 and 2.3-liter turbo four-cylinder.
The V8 and V6 are carried over from the current generation but will have some performance upgrades in the new car. Currently they produce 420hp and 390lb-ft of torque for the V8 and 305hp and 280lb-ft for the V6. In fact, Ford is promising upgrades to the V8 like larger valves, new camshafts, new cylinder heads and forged connecting rods that will elevate performance beyond the current version.
Ford claims that the 2.3-liter engine will produce a projected 300hp and 305lb-ft of torque, and it will offer class-leading fuel economy. It uses a twin-scroll turbocharger for added power and efficiency.
Transmissions will be carried over from the current generation with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic.
The suspension has received a thorough upgrade with a new front subframe that is stuffer with a double-ball-joint front MacPherson suspension, which also allows for larger brakes. The rear gets a new integral-link independent rear suspension.
The original Mustang went on sale on April 17, 1964, and to recognize the car’s 50th anniversary, each sixth generation Mustang sold in 2014 will a badge on the instrument panel recognizing the feat.
“We built a new Mustang from the ground up that is quicker, better-looking, more refined and more efficient, without losing any of the raw appeal that people have associated with Mustang for half a century,” Dave Pericak, Ford Mustang chief engineer.
These details give a good idea about the sixth generation Mustang, but we will have to wait to learn some truly important details like its weight, official power figures and price.
With the Mustang, Ford invented a new automobile class, the “pony car”, and rival brands rushed into production to come up with cars of the same category. The first 18 months of the Mustang’s production stayed in history as the most successful car debut ever. After more than 40 years, the coupé is still being produced and Ford is selling around 150.000 Mustangs each year.
In 1964, Ford unveiled their first ever Mustang. It inherited many parts, from other Ford models like the Falcon and Fairlane. Just 5 months after its introduction, the Mustang underwent a facelift and continued to grow heavier and bigger every year. The first generation Mustangs had mid and front engines, with displacements from 2.8 to 7.0 liters. The most basic model made 120hp while the top-of-the-line car delivered 385hp.
The second generation Mustang was launched in 1974. After the continuous enlargement of the first generation until 1973, Ford decided to dramatically decrease its size to as close as possible to the original model. Shape and styling, as well as the mechanical features, were all reformulated in order to give the car an appearance that was closer to the 1964 model but with a higher performance.
A fresh new Mustang, generation III, came out in 1979. Over the years, improvements were made to the Mustang regarding interior and exterior styling, giving it more comfort and a modernized look. Power was amplified as well throughout the years of production of the Mustang III. Ford also re-added the high-performance Mustang GT variant to the lineup in 1982.
15 years past the Mustang’s last major amendment, in 1994, Ford launched its fourth generation. Motor Trend magazine named the Mustang Car of the Year for the third time when its fourth generation debuted. The Mustang IV engines ranged from a basic 3.8-liter to the top-of-the-line 5.4-liter Cobra R. Power output was increased along the years, starting at 145 hp to reach 190 hp for the standard version.
Ford introduced the greatly redesigned fifth generation of the Mustang in 2004 at the North American International Auto Show. The refreshed car was an immediate hit in terms of sales. In 2012, the current Mustang received a minor facelift. Improvements include a changed exterior, and the 5.0 liter V8, introduced in 2010, got a power-uprgrade.
