General Motors has announced the official opening of the company’s new Advanced Design Studio, located in Seoul, South Korea, this year’s World Design Capital. The new design studio is part of GM’s will to focus on the design, the production and selling of the best vehicles. The studio is located in what is considered Seoul’s most exciting and stylish places and also one of the world’s trendiest neighborhoods, the Gangnam area.
“Our car designers get inspiration from life and Gangnam is a place where people worship design, style and fashion,” said Ed Welburn, GM Vice President of Global Design. “Our Korean designers will sample perfection every day surrounded by some of the top brands and fashion houses in the world and this ideal location will nurture their creative souls.”
According to GM Daewoo President and CEO Mike Arcamone this new design studio should pay a very important role in the company’s success. “Our award-winning Korean designers were responsible for the Chevrolet Cruze, Spark and yet to be launched Aveo (sold domestically as Lacetti Premiere, Matiz and Gentra),” said Arcamone. “Seoul Advanced Design Studio demonstrates GM’s support of GM Daewoo, and in turn, our support for Seoul’s year long initiative aimed at capitalizing on its World Design Capital status.”
In order to improve its function and area of expertise the GM Daewoo Design Center, one of GM global design centers responsible for GM’s global mini and small vehicles, was relocated from its headquarters in Bupyeong, Incheon to the Seoul.
“Seoul Advanced Design Studio will be at the forefront of fashion, the arts, culture and business. It will provide an ideal environment for our designers, who benefit from constant inspiration and stimuli,” said GM Daewoo Design Center Vice President Tae-wan Kim.
The design team at the Seoul Advanced Design Studio is composed by thirty designers and other employers that are specialized in exterior and interior styling of global mini and small vehicles. They also do research on trends in colors and materials, and advanced electronics, digital design, and studio engineering. The work of this team will point out the future design perspective for GM Daewoo and General Motors.
