The estate is 307mm longer than the standard hatchback and is identical to the standard car up to the B-pillar. At the rear it gets new two-part rear lights.

The Golf Estate comes standard with VW’s XDS+ electronic locking differential and is optionally available with dynamic chassis control that allows the driver to change suspension setups from a button in the cabin. It lowers the car by 10mm in its sportiest mode. There is also an optional sport suspension that lowers the Golf Estate by 15mm.

The Golf Estate has 605 liters of cargo space with the rear seats up, 100 liters more than the previous generation. With the rear seats down, it has 1,620 liters, compared to 1,495 liters in the previous generation. The luggage cover has a two-stage power cover with variable heights

The car is available with seven engines – four petrol and three diesel – at launch with between 84hp and 148hp. All of them come with start/stop and regenerative braking.

There are five-speed manual, six-speed manual, six-speed DSG and seven-speed DSG transmissions available. Two of the diesel engines are also available with 4MOTION all-wheel drive as an option.

Fuel economy is as low as 3.9l/100km with either the 103hp or 109hp diesels with a manual transmission.

It is offered in Trendline, Comfortline and Highline trims. All of them come standard with automatic post-collision braking that automatically stops the car if it detects that there has been a collision. Optional features include PreCrash, a system that detects imminent collisions and automatically tightens the seatbelts, closes the windows and closes the sunroof. City emergency braking that stops the car automatically at low speeds, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist and several infotainment systems are also optional.

Volkswagen has not announced pricing for the Golf Estate yet.
