Hagerty sells collector car insurance in the US, and each year it releases a list of the top cars under $100,000 that could be future collector cars.
This year's list comprises the following cars in order from 10 to 1: Audi TT RS, Dodge Charger SRT8, Nissan GT-R Black Edition, Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, Porsche 911, Volkswagen Golf R, Fiat 500 Abarth, Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8, Ford Mustang Boss 302 Laguna Seca Edition and Hagerty's number 1 future collector car was the Buick Regal GS.
Some of the members of the list seem very questionable. It seems extremely hard to believe that anyone is going to be bidding up the Barrett-Jackson for a warmed-over Opel. The Charger SRT8 seems equally unlikely. They are not rare, not very desirable and outclassed by plenty of other contemporary cars.
The better picks are the GT-R, Camaro and Mustang. The top models of the Camaro and Mustang hold their value very well in the US. The GT-R is a car that is in high demand among a lot of people who can not afford it. That is a sure recipe for future collector status.
The Golf R, Fiat 500 Abarth and Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 seem like uncertain choices for the list. All three are new models for the US. The Golf R and 500 Abarth are brand new in the US, and historically hot hatches have not held their value well in the US. However that could change in the future.
Muscle SUVs are a new niche in the US. So it is hard to say if the Cherokee will really become a future classic.
