fell 30 places from 15th in 2010 to 45th in 2012, and it was the lowest placed of the automotive brands.

Taking ten of the 50 spots is the best that the auto industry has done in the ranking since Boston Consulting Group started the survey in 2005. Apple, Google and Samsung took the top three spots.

The ranking is created by surveying 1,512 senior executives from major companies, 54 from automotive companies, and combining those data with the company's shareholder returns, revenue growth and margin growth from the last three years. For the automotive brands, a high-ranking brand had to be making innovations in lowering costs or innovating in hybrid and electric powertrains.

"Innovation is about bringing something new to the market that is accepted and monetized by the customer," said report co-author Hadi Zablit.

Hyundai was ranked tenth on the list but was the highest place automotive brand. It was followed by ToyotaToyotaToyotaJapan, 1937 > present155 models
