sedan. Part of the mission of the new car is to make Infiniti more popular in Europe. So in addition to the thirsty but powerful 3.7-liter V6 in the current G37, Infiniti will also offer a turbocharged four-cylinder engine and only for Europe a diesel. There will also be a hybrid. The news comes from the head of Infiniti of the Americas.

The Q50 will go on sale in the summer in North America with the 3.7-liter V6. The other powertrain options will roll out over the next two years.

The Q50 has dual challenges. New president Johan de Nysschen is trying to expand the Infiniti brand into Europe and Asia. However, the G37 made up more than half of Infinti's North American sales. It cannot risk losing those sales while it builds the brand elsewhere.

"You must have diesel available to be a serious member of the premium market," said de Nysschen.

The four-cylinder turbo will come from Renault-Nissan's cooperation with Daimler and will be similar to the turbo four-cylinder in the A-Class.

The diesel will also come from Daimler and only be available in Europe.

Speaking of the lack of a diesel or more fuel efficient engine in the Infiniti lineup, de Nysschen said: "We simply lack a vehicle in those segments. We can't compete with the world's most powerful luxury auto companies on a part-time basis."
