For a brief time the McLaren F1 GTR dominated GT-class racing, now McLaren is ready to showcase a new car for competition. The MP4-12C GT3 will make its international racing debut with three teams this weekend at the 24 Hours of Spa. The GT3 car had previously competed in a single round of the British GT Championship has a shakedown for this competition.
These initial races are meant to develop the MP4-12C GT3 for 2012 when McLaren will deliver 20 cars to privateer GT3 teams across the world.
The GT3 car uses a tuned version of the 3.8l twin turbo V8 found in the road car. The race car uses a paddle-shifted Ricardo transmission instead of the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission in the road car. It also uses a different ABS system and improved aerodynamics. The GT3 has been widened by 110mm over the road car.
Below is a video that McLaren created of testing the MP4-12C GT3.
