Mercedes Citan Urban Van Begins Winter Testing

Mercedes Citan Urban Van Begins Winter Testing

Mercedes is prepping its new Citan urban delivery van for release soon. The van is already in extreme winter testing in northern Sweden that puts it through -40° Celsius and snow-covered roads.

Mercedes has its winter testing center in the small town of Arjeplog, Sweden, that allows it to take its vehicles on a frozen lake, mountain roads and public roads. The weather allows Mercedes to test cold starting, ventilation, heating and the performance of materials in sub-zero temperatures. The snow and ice also allow Mercedes to test the vehicles cold weather handling and lets it tune the ESP.

Mercedes has 10%,15% and 20% grades prepared to test it vehicles. It uses heated asphalt on one side and ice on the other to further evaluate traction.

The ice circuit is also designed to provide different levels of grip to test the car. The 500 meter circuit has snow on the outside, rough ice in the middle and smooth ice on the inside. Test drivers switch among the surfaces to test grip and stability.

"I'm also extremely happy with the changes in the interior – both in terms of the heating, ventilation and air conditioning, as well as the robust materials selection. The Citan is now a bona fide Mercedes-Benz after all the tests and work our development engineers have done. And so it's ready for series production," said Volker Mornhinweg. the head of Mercedes-Benz Vans.
