Morgan and Zytek have collaborated to develop two concept cars. The two vehicles are to be released in early 2012, under the ‘Morgan+E’ programme. Both cars will be based on the Morgan Aero Supersport chassis, but with Zytek electric power instead of BMW V8 power.
Interestingly, the Zytek motors will be combined with a conventional manual gearbox, which they hope will increase not only its performance and range, but also driver input.
The effort is being part-funded by a £100,000 grant from the Niche Vehicle Network CR&D Programme. This programme promotes the development and application of new technologies in low carbon vehicles.
This is not Zytek’s first experience with high performance electric sports cars. In 1997 they converted a Lotus Elise to electric drive which led to engineering programmes with Chrysler and General Motors.
Zytek also has experience in motor sport. They were the first company to race a hybrid at Le Mans and they also supplied technology for the first KERS-equipped Formula 1 car to win a Grand Prix.
The prototype will use a new derivative of Zytek’s proven 94bhp electric powertrain, which is known for being both compact and lightweight. The batteries will be integrated into the vehicles aluminium chassis.
Steve Tremble, Zytek’s marketing director, says “with maximum torque from zero rpm, electric power can deliver an immediate, thrilling driving experience”, which should appeal to Morgan customers.
