Audi is revelaing ahead of its official premiere at the Paris Motor Show in the beginning of October the new generation of the A5 Sportback and S5 Sportback. The new generation A5 gets a completely reengineered suspension, high-performance drives and innovative driver assistance systems and its high-end sportier version S5 gets a new six-cylinder turbo engine developing a mighty 354 hp and 500 Nm. Audi is also announcing the new A5 Sportback g-tron which can be driven on either Audi e-gas, natural gas or gasoline.
The new Sportback follows the same design of the coupé version, but comes with a stretched wheelbase, the short overhangs and the long, wraparound front lid with power dome that emphasizes the dynamism of the five-door coupé. Compared to the previous generation the new A5 Sportback gets a new three-dimensionally modeled Singleframe grille significantly flatter and wider.
One of the new features of the second generation Sportback are the increased interior dimensions, with extra 17mm in length, 11mm of shoulder room for driver and front passenger and 24mm rear knee room. Among the best in its class the A5 Sportback has a 480 liters of luggage capacity.
Just like the coupé variant the A5 Sportback interior can be fitted with an optional Virtual Cockpit system, which includes a 12.3in high-definition digital instrument panel, as well as the latest version of Audi’s MMI (Multi Media Interface) Plus infotainment system. Options also include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, wireless smartphone charging pad and a Bang & Olufsen sound system.
Customers will be able to choose between two TFSI and three TDI engine versions with their new Audi A5 Sportback, with output ranging between 190hp and 286hp. Audi states that fuel consumption as been reduced by as much as 22 percent while the power output has raised 17 percent. The engines will be combined with a six-speed manual transmission, seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission or eight-speed tiptronic. With front-drive as standard, quattro all-wheel drive will be available for two versions. It will be standard on the
286hp 3.0 TDI.
The new Sportback gets a variable suspension fitted with continuous damping control technology. It is linked with the four different driving modes: Comfort, Auto, Dynamic and Efficiency. Safety technology includes collision avoidance auto braking, adaptive cruise control traffic jam assist, park assist, cross-traffic assist rear, exit warning, turn assist, collision avoidance assist as well as camera-based recognition of traffic signs.
New S5 Sportback
The
new S5 Sportback will be powered by a 3.0 TFSI V6 turbo engine with 354hp. It can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in 4.7 and reach an electronically limited top speed of 250km/h. The engine was been combined with the quattro all-wheel drive system and the eight-speed tiptronic as standard. With an unladen weight of 1,660 kilograms, the five-door sports coupé is 85 kilograms lighter than its predecessor. The announced combined consumption is 7.3l/100km.
A5 Sportback g-tron
Audi is also launching with the A5 Sportback the
g-tron version. It is fitted with a 170hp 2.0 TFSI engine that can run on Audi e-gas or natural gas, but also on gasoline.
The Audi A5 Sportback and S5 Sportback will reache the European market at the start of 2017.
