begins production of the 918 Spyder today with the first deliveries of the car scheduled after Christmas but before the end of the year.
Prices for the 918 start at €781,155 for the base car or €853,155 for the Weissach package; in the United States it is $845,000 and $929,000 respectively, and it is £657,400 and £718,000 respectively in the UK.
Unlike many modern supercars, the 918 was not completely sold out prior to production beginning, and Porsche says about a third of the cars are still available for order.
The Weissach package adds bare carbon fiber to the roof, rear wings, rearview mirrors and windshield frame. The wheels are magnesium instead of aluminum. The interior gets Alcantara and carbon fiber to replace the standard leather and aluminum. It has less sound insulation. All of the changes take 77lb (35kg) out of the car. It also has six-point seat belts and optional vinyl-wrapped parts instead of paint to save even more weight.
The 918 provides 887hp and 787lb-ft of torque, although it can provide 940lb-ft for brief periods, from its combined powertrain with a 4.6-liter V8 and electric motors on the front and rear axle.
Even if you do not have the money to buy the car, Porsche has put up a configurator on its web sites that allow you to build the car and pretend that you can actually afford it.
