have been collaborating since 2010, but an announcement at the Frankfurt Motor Show from Renault-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn indicates that it is advancing in a major, global way.

“While our initial collaboration focused strongly on European projects, we are now focusing on synergies in all key markets. The largest economies of scale are always global,” said Ghosn.

The latest project would have the automakers working together on a new, front-wheel drive vehicle platform that would be used by the next generation of compacts from both companies.

The project has been codenamed JC1 for joint compact first generation that would allow for multiple wheelbases, variable track lengths, and front- or all-wheel drive.

"Daimler needs an MFA successor and we need more cars in that segment. There’s now a study to see if we can develop a joint platform. Step two would be common manufacturing, which is also part of the study,” said Andy Palmer, Nissan head of product planning.
