wants to cut 7,500 jobs from its French factories by 2016 to help the company break even. Most of the cuts will come simply by not replacing retiring workers, but Renault believes that about 1,900 of the jobs will come from cuts to current workers. However, getting rid of the workers should mean that Renault would not have to close any factories in France.

Company CEO Carlos Ghosn says that he does not believe that Renault will have to close factories, but the European auto market will fall a further 3% in 2013 after falling 8% in 2012 compared to 2011.

Renault has two goals for cutting workers. It is hoping to cut costs by €396 million ($530 million) and bring French production costs down to the level of Spain or the UK.

French auto registrations have fallen to 1997 levels. They were down 14% in 2012 to 1.9 million cars.
