at the New York Auto Show today and surprised the audience with the introduction of the new Camaro Z/28, which it claims is the fastest production Camaro ever on a track.
The new Z/28 is meant to be the ultimate Camaro track car. Power comes from a 7.0-liter V8 with dry sump lubrication that makes 500hp and 470lb-ft of torque. Power gets to the road via a six-speed manual with a rear limited-slip differential. , it also has significantly lower weight. The Z/28 is 300lbs lighter than the ZL1 and gets lightweight wheels, thinner rear window glass and other modifications.
Other performance upgrades include a bodykit and spoiler that increase downforce, Brembo carbon ceramic brakes, and it only comes with a manual transmission. Air conditioning is optional.
Changes to the body include a larger splitter, flat underbody, fender flares and a rear diffuser.
Chevrolet claims that the changes translate to a Camaro that can pull 1.05g during cornering.
“While the Camaro ZL1 offers exceptional performance on the street, the drag strip, and the track, the Z/28 is entirely focused on the track performance. The Z/28 will be too track-focused for most drivers, but offers road-racers one of the most capable track cars ever offered from an automaker,” said Al Oppenheiser, Camaro chief engineer.
Inside, the Z/28 has the flat-bottom steering wheel from the ZL1 and the sport seats from the ZL1. Nine pounds have lightened the rear seats by removing padding and the pass-through.
The Z/28 will go on sale in the spring of 2014.
The refreshed Camaro gets an updated exterior with improved aerodynamics, better cooling and improved high-speed stability.
The design has been tweaked to be wider and lower. The front fascia dips lower to give a more aggressive look, and the upper grill is wider, which gives the Camaro a visually wider appearance. SSChevrolet Camaro Coupe 2SSUnited States of America, 2011 > present2 photos
models get a functional hood vent to reduce heat and mostly to look cool. At the rear, the designers also tried to make the car look wider and added horizontal taillights and a rear diffuser.
The refreshed Camaro will go on sale later this year.
