Thanks to this results Webber has extended to 14 poitns his lead in the drivers' championship standings. Alonso is still in second but now he is joined by Vettel, with exactly the same points. McLaren drivers Hamilton and Button might have blown their chances of winning the title in Japan as they are now 32 and 35 points, respectively, behind leader Mark Webber.Button was fourth and Hamilton fifth.
The biggest incidents of the race happened in the first laps, although it had already started before the race even started whit Virgin's Lucas Di Grassi crashing at the 130R on his way to the grid.
Fast-starting Vitaly Petrov, just as the race took off, slammed into the barriers in the pit straitgh taking with him Williams' Hulkenberg along the way. This was just before the accident involving Felipe Massa and Tonio Liuzzi, as the Ferrari driver went to the grass going into the first corner and crashed with Force India's driver.
With this two accidents right at the start of the race the safety car came in order to take all the cars and debries from the track. During that time, Robert Kubica that had a good start coming up into second place and splitting the Red Bulls, lost his right rear wheel forcing him to retire.
After the safety car return to the boxes the Red Bulls started pulling away from the rest of the field, securing a safe advantage to control until the end of the race. The only time they were headed was when Button's alternative strategy allowed him to lead from laps 25 to 38.
Alonso and Hamilton had a battle for third place going on during the race until Hamilton reported the loss of third gear in the final stages. The technical problem cost him the chances of trying to get a podium finish but also a place on the final standings.
Michael Schumacher was sixth in Suzuka on what was one of the German's strongest performance of the season. The seven-time world champion seemed set to stay behind his team-mate Nico Rosberg. But with five laps to go the younger German lost a wheel and had a big crash at the S curves.
Late entertainment came from home favourite Kamui Kobayashi, which had a similar pitting strategy as Jenson Button. He went past Alguersuari and Adrian Sutil, but after his visit to pits he lost those positions once again.
With fresh tyres Kobayashi past Alguersuari once again and gained a place after Sutil's engine broke. In a hard race and for the delight of the home crowd the Japanese driver was able to overtake Rubens Barrichello and his Sauber team-mate Nick Heidfeld, securing seventh place.
Nick Heidfeld made his first incursion to the points as he finished eighth on his second race after the return to Formula One. Barrichello and Buemi completed the top ten.
