Jenson Button did what he had to do to try and prevent Vettel’s title clinch in Japan, by winning the Japanese Grand Prix this season. But still he didn’t prevent Vettel to win his second world title as the German finished third behind Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso.
With McLaren’s first dry race win of the season, Jenson Button ended the winning streak of Sebastian Vettel, who still managed to do enough with a podium finish to revalidate the world title he conquered in last year’s final race in Abu Dhabi.
Vettel was definitely looking for a win in Japan to crown is second title in a row and was definitely determined to defend his position from Jenson Button who wasn’t ready to simply hand it over to the German. With a fast start, Button was all over Vettel, but after a small trip to the grass, which would then be investigated, the Brit lost his momentum.
Button would then be overtaken by his team-mate Hamilton that took second place until a small puncture forced to pit earlier on lap seven. He dropped into fourth place behind Fernando Alonso, who managed to overtake his team-mate Massa early on.
After the first trip to the pits Vettel managed to stay ahead of Button, although Button, who had preserved better his tyres cut the gap between the two. But after the second stop on laps 19 and 20 Button got ahead of the pack with an amazing in-lap pace and a great McLaren stop.
After a touch between Massa and Hamilton that left some debris on the track the field was packed again and Vettel who was caught in traffic had to make an early visit to the pits. This gave an advantage to Button who remained further three laps and extended his lead. The German would lose another position to Alonso who just came out ahead of the world champion.
Vettel attacked the Ferrari driver’s position until his team gave him orders not to do so. Alonso then attacked Button and he closed the gap to one second until the Brit decided to force a little bit the pace.
Mark Webber managed to get ahead of Massa and Hamilton after the second stop to finish in fourth position. Hamilton lost his position to the Brazilian after the incident which caused the safety car to come in, but he would then recover it into the first corner on lap 37.
Staying out longer than the rest of the field, Michael Schumacher took sixth place at the end of the Grand Prix, with the strategy allowing the Mercedes driver to overtake Felipe Massa.
With similar strategies Sergio Perez and Vitaly Petrov only made to visits to the pits which allowed them to come home in eighth and ninth respectively. Nico Rosberg came from 23rd to take the last point for Mercedes.
Because of a poor start local-hero Kamui Kobayashi’s hopes of a good result in Japan ended as he was caught in traffic throughout the whole race, finishing in a disappointing 13th place, behind the two Force Indias.
Bruno Senna had a disastrous race. After a poor start getting away slightly slowly and then running wide, the Brazilian had a slow stop which made him go down the order into 16th position.
