to develop a new platform for C-segment compact cars that both companies can sell globally. Volvo will still use its new SPA platform for larger vehicles and crossovers.

Geely says that it will use the platform to “help achieve synergies through economies of scale and scope in terms of development, testing, and procurement, without the slightest compromise on brand value."

"If you stretch an architecture too much you have to compromise - we don't want to do that. To stretch the SPA platform down to the C-segment would mean too many compromises," said a Volvo spokesperson.

Volvo and Geely say that they want the new platform to debut in 2015. Before that Geely will launch in the UK to establish showrooms and the name in consumers’ minds. It will wait to launch in continental Europe until the new platform is ready to debut.

Geely says that the marketing of the new cars will lean heavily on Volvo’s reputation for safety and reliability.

"Our acquisition of Volvo enhanced our image and overseas consumers are seeing us as an international company. Our deliveries in the U.S. and Europe will be banking on those jointly developed models," said Geely CEO Gui Shengyue.
