before it even reveals the new car, which is not due until the end of 2014. The new technologies include pedestrian detection at night, road edge and barrier detection, adaptive cruise control with steering assist and collision mitigation for animals.

"We are introducing the first Volvos with autonomous steering to avoid accidents and make driving more comfortable," said Thomas Broberg, Senior Safety Advisor Volvo Car Group.

The pedestrian detection in the darkness system uses auto braking to make driving safer at night. It can detect other vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists at night and automatically slow down. The system is also programmed to know the silhouettes of animals and can automatically slow the vehicle down for them both during the day and at night.

The same system also can detect the edge of the road or roadside barriers. If the system detects that the driver is steering into the barrier, it applies steering torque to bring it back on track.

The steering assist system also works with the adaptive cruise control. It can make small steering corrections while the cruise control system is on.

Volvo has set a goal for itself that no one is killed or seriously injured in a Volvo by 2020.
