has partnered with Ericcson to develop connected car services for its future cars, and it debuted the latest evolution of its Sensus Connect infotainment system that will be available on future cars. It showed the new technologies at the Consumer Electronics Show.

The Ericcson technology stores data in the cloud regionally so that Volvo can adapt apps to its cars based on where they are. It can also send specific traffic and weather data based on location.

“This partnership is another proof-point that Volvo Cars is in the vanguard of innovation with a clear understanding of the importance of the car in an increasingly connected society," said Lex Kerssemakers, Volvo head of product strategy.

In the near term, Volvo will have the latest version of its Sensus Connect infotainment system in its cars. The update includes improved cloud-based technology that allows drivers to find parking and pay for it from the vehicle. It can also turn the car into a Wi-Fi hotspot, and Volvo has also added Pandora Internet radio to the system.

The latest Sensus system also allows drivers to download a smartphone app that allows drivers to pre-hear or pre-cool the car and set navigation destinations.

The navigation system allows drivers to look up expanded information from Wikipedia to learn more about destinations.

“Technology should make your life easier. That’s why we listened carefully to our customers when creating Sensus Connect. It’s not about offering a thousand apps; it’s about giving you precisely what you need, before you even knew you needed it,” said David Holecek, Volvo Connectivity Brand Manager.
