At this weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix Mark Webber won’t be thinking about his point advantage in the championship. There is only one thought on the Aussie’s mind: to win the Sunday’s race.
In the last GP Webber overtook Lewis Hamilton in the Driver’s standings and is now leading the field with the Brit lying in second with a five-point disadvantage. Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso is in third, 19 points behind.
Webber feels nice about leading the F1 standings but he is focused on catching another win for Red Bull and himself on Sunday’s race.
"I am leading. There are a few guys who have a few less points here and there, but it is till very interesting," said Webber. "It can move around - in a negative or positive way for some people quite quickly. It is certainly a nice position to be in.”
The Red Bull driver says that he would like to catch a few more points in Singapore as the fight for the title is still very open. “"But will five of us go to Abu Dhabi? The chances are it could - it might be three, might he five, might be one,” says Webber.
The most important for him is to finish the race and to keep on the run until Abu Dhabi. "Leading the championship in Singapore is not the important thing, leading it in Abu Dhabi is," adds the Aussie.
Webber will be facing the Singapore GP as normal race. His objective is to get the best out of the car and try to get a good return from it. One thing is sure: "Non finishes are not part of the menu. I need to keep scoring, getting as many points as we can. Winning makes a difference, that is what our goal is to try and do here," says Webber.
The Aussie recognizes that Red Bull may have a good opportunity to return to the wins in Singapore, after a difficult race at Monza just two weeks ago.
"We're not leading by mistake, we have earned it. We are looking to add to it pretty solidly this weekend, it should be okay for our car, it is bumpy which should be good for us in the past. We are optimistic that we can continue to chip away. It is important to do that in the next few weeks."
