Despite four German drivers making it through into the final part of qualifying it is Mark Webber who will start on pole position for tomorrows German Grand Prix. He will look to close the 80 point gap to his team mate Sebastian Vettel who is off the front row in third for the first time this year.
Lewis Hamilton provided the filling in the Red Bull sandwich with one of his finest laps, but Jenson Button struggled to find the ultimate pace of his team mate. Despite finding good pace in practice 3 Button found a good balance hard to come by and his car looked to have a different handling balance to the sister McLaren through all three sessions.
Nico Rosberg comprehensively out performed Michael Schumacher to qualify in sixth, which he will hope to build upon with a strong race performance. Schumacher, on the other hand will hope to maintain his strong performances in the opening stages of Grand Prix this year after a disappointing run to tenth.
Adrian Sutil and Vitali Petrov qualified in eighth and ninth respectively. This will be particularly pleasing for Sutil who has been overshadowed in recent races by strong showings from Paul Di Resta.
Paul Di Resta and Nick Heidfeld will look to use the freedom of tire choice that qualifying in eleventh and twelfth afford them to push closer to their team mates in tomorrow’s Grand Prix.
The first part of qualifying saw the exclusion of Kamui Kobayashi among others. Major drama was avoided as Nico Rosberg posted the sixth fastest time with one minute to go to avoid the drop zone. Both Lotus, Hispania and Virgin cars were excluded with Liuzzi bringing up the rear due to an engine change.
