The R8 is a race prototype introduced in 2000 as a result of redevelopments of the R8R and R8C. The Audi R8 is one of the most successful race cars ever by claiming the Le Mans title in five years: 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2005. With this history, the R8 is the most successful car to compete at Le Mans to the present day.

The petrol engined R8 was replaced in 2006 by the diesel engined Audi R10 TDI.
