Review

For 2012 Audi updated the R8 LMS to an Ultra edition using a new transmission, more open exhaust, optimized cooling system and better safety.

Audi made significant upgrades for the R8 LMS for 2012. The doors are made from carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) and the car comes with Audi's PS1 safety seat that exceeds the safety standards of many of the series in which the R8 competes. The transmission has been reinforced with a unit that Audi says will be more reliable.

The engine is still the 5.2l, V10 with 570hp depending on regulations. There is a new, exhaust that raises torque at low rpms, though. The engine oil cooler has been enlarged, and the transmission oil cooler has been moved to the rear of the car.

The chassis of the improved R8 should also lower laptimes. The wheels have been enlarged and widened. Brake cooling as been optimized to keep brake temperatures down, and Bilstein re-tuned the shocks.

The body of the R8 has also recieved some small changes. Depending on regional regulations, Audi has developed a hood for the R8 with cooling louvers. The rear wing is wider and has larger end plates to increase downforce, and the diffusion under the car has also been changed.
