Since its launch in 2005 this high-performance model offered  the hallmark athleticism of BMW's M vehicles combined with drive and chassis technology inspired by the world of motor racing.

The BMW M6 Convertible was a popular model amongst automotive enthusiasts with sporting ambitions. The US was the number one market for the model, with recorded sales of 3,528 closed and 3,247 open-top vehicles. Germany followed as runner-up market with 1,183 / 541 units, with third position for sales of the BMW M6 Coupé coming from Great Britain and Ireland, with 619 vehicle registrations.

With a total of 14,152 units built BMW M GmbH announced in 2010 the end of production of the BMW M6 Coupé and the BMW M6 Convertible.

With the departure of these two models and following the also discontinued fourth-generation BMW M5, the production of the V10 373 kW/507 hp high-rev engine also came to an end. It had been awarded Engine of the Year Awards in 2005 and 2006. In the two following years the engine took the first place in the category for engines with displacement above 4 litres.
