The C7.R was unveiled in early 2014 in time for its racing debut on January 25 at the Rolex 24 at Daytona co-developed alongside the Z06, and they share a chassis and basic aerodynamic setup.

The C7.R and Z06 share their aluminum frames, and it is 40% stronger than the previous C6.R. The use of the same frame means that the C7.R shares the forward-tilted radiator, functional hood and front-quarter panel vents, and rear transmission and differential cooling intakes with the Z06. They also get additional downforce from new front splitters, rocker panels, and front- and rear-brake cooling ducts.

The C7.R uses the same 5.5-liter V8 from the previous C6.R but modified for direct injection.
