Gurgel Veículos was established by João do Amaral Gurgel in 1969 in Rio Claro, Brasil, specialising in off-road vehicles. The company produced the first car entirely designed in Brazil. Some of Gurgel´s cars were electric and ethanol-powered (though the its founder was against the use of vegetal fuel). Quite successful during the period of Brazilian high protectionist laws, Gurgel could not resist the competition when the Brazilian market was open to foreign cars. The company closed down in 1993 and went officially bankrupt in 1995.
