It’s the end of a hot summer day and I’m cruising along highway A1 up north. Sunlight is casting a long shadow ahead of my car and I can see its gorgeous outline, flickering through road undulations. But I’m not going home, I’m heading to my favourite nearby back road just because. After 15000 kms and just a little over 1 year it’s the perfect time to look back on my ownership experience with a 2008 Porsche Cayman S.
To be bought this car had to fend off such formidable opponents as the Lotus Exige S and the BMW M3 E90. Each of these cars has its unique qualities but the way the Cayman distils a pure driving experience with genuine everyday practicality is really unique.
So what is it like? And how is life with it on a daily basis?
In long highway stretches where you would expect a sports car to be a pain it confirms how well judged the recipe is. You don’t waft along, it’s a stiff car and always very communicative, but it allows you to relax enough to enjoy cruising. The (optional) PASM active suspension takes the nasty edges from road imperfections, engine noise is ever-present but settles into the background nicely and the sports seats are very supportive avoiding back ache.
The legendary braking technology from the Stuttgart house creates some high expectations. With 318 millimetres (12.5”) 4 piston aluminium monobloc up front and 299 millimetres (11.8”) at the back, they certainly look the part even before you drive the car.
After some hard stops they start screeching and rumbling here and there but stopping power is unaffected, leaving you the confidence to attack corner after corner. ABS is also very well judged and you’re barely aware of it intervening (on road driving) unless you have to make an emergency stop or do something really silly.
