From the moment you start attacking a particular twisty road the car's personality changes immediately. The precision in steering, gear changes and quick engine response don’t give you much time to pause for a breather. The chassis still feels benign and forgiving but it lays bare any clumsiness in driving inputs. Not by sending you in a fiery ball down the mountain slope, mind you, rather highlighting in red that misjudged heel’n’toe or clumsy brake modulation. When you quickly and smoothly string together a set of demanding corners it’s immensely satisfying and you feel like Walter Röhrl (minus all the laughing because nobody heard you say that).
The Sport Chrono pack includes a stopwatch for road use, not particularly useful, but more importantly raises the PSM (stability management) threshold and sharpens throttle response. The added leeway allows some gentle tail out moments but you sense the Cayman's bias for precision driving, not a drifter's car really.
Practicality is really good for what is in essence a silly car. You can leave both front (150 litres) and rear (260 litres) luggage compartments to your missus and still have the top of the hatch to store your sneakers and scuba gear. Fuel consumption is normal for this kind of performance, not a camel, but not a black hole either, doing about 13 litres/100 (18 mpg) on a tank with vigorous driving style.
