Launched in 1981 at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the 512 BBi replaced the 512 BB. The main change could be spotted in name with the introduction of the "i" indicating the change from the Weber 40 IF 3C carburetors to the Bosch K-Jetronic mechanical fuel injection.
In terms of mechanics this was the most significant modification. However the 12-cylinder flat engine had lower maximum revs (6600rpm against the 6800 of the 512 BB) and less 20hp of output, which didn't prevent it from standing only 3 km/h away from the 283km/h top speed of its predecessor.
In terms of exterior design the great change occurred in the redesigned rear bumper and the wheels, the black trim on the NACA side inlet and the body-colour wing mirror. Inside the 512 Bi received Connolly leather seats, air conditioning and central locking.
The 512 BBi was produced between 1981 and 1984, when it was replaced by Testarossa. In total 1007 units were produced.
