Fiat introduced its 126 city car model into the car market in 1972 so as it would take the place of the well-known Fiat 500. The 126 was produced at the Cassino and Termini Imerese plants in Italy for over a decade but production was carried on in Poland, where the same model was produced since 1973 until 2000 and sold as the Polski Fiat 126p.

The Fiat 126 received a slight styling facelift in 1984, adopting the name 126p FL, and again in 1987, having its name adjusted to 126 Bis (which was produced until 1991). In 1993, Fiat launched a new model that would replace the 126 on the markets, the Cinquecento. The Polish production 126p got a new restyling in 1994.

Overall, nearly five million Fiat 126 units were built: 1.352.912 in Italy, 3.318.674 in Poland and 2.069 in Austria, plus an unknown number of copies in Yugoslavia.
