LaFayette Motors Corporation was founded in Indianapolis, Indiana, in 1919 and was named in honour of Marquis de la Fayette a French military officer who had gone to America to support the Independence Revolution in 1777. LaFayette was a luxury car and was the first car to be equipped with an electric clock. In 1921 the president of Nash Motors also became president of LaFayette Motors, which facilities were moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1922. In 1924 LaFayette was bought by Nash and LaFayette’s name was dropped for a decade being reintroduced in 1934 in a more economical, smaller line. Three years later the name was combined with Nash and became known as Nash LaFayette until 1941 when the name was replaced by a new Nash series.
