History, development and general characteristics

The fifth generation Ford Cortina, officially released in September 1979 as the Cortina 80, was initially supposed to be a Cortina variant and not a separate new model. However, this car was given such an important improvement from the previous Mk4 model that, just soon after it was released, the car was dubbed Mk5 Cortina by the press, the public and the people involved.

The Mk5 Cortina carried on with the success that had been perpetuated by the previous generations, being Britain’s best selling model until 1981. Four trim level variants were available: Base, L, GL, and the more luxurious Ghia variant. The Ford Cortina was finally completely taken off the markets in 1982, completing two whole successfull decades of production.

Engine and Transmission

The Mk5 Ford Cortina has a front engine, rear-wheel drive system, just like all previous versions. Standard four-speed manual and optional three-speed automatic transmissions were available.

The 5th Cortina’s engine range starts at the base 1.3-liter powerplant with 60 hp and goes up to the range-topper 2.3-liter V6 unit with 114 hp. In between, there were 1.6-liter engines with 73 and 90 hp, plus a 2.0-liter unit with 101 hp. Outside Ford’s British production, different engines were available for the Mk5 Cortina: the South African cars were given a 3.0-liter V6, while in the Australian market the Cortina’s engine was available with 3.3 and 4.1 litres.

Body and Design

The Mk5 Ford Cortina basically retained the same body styling options from the previous generations, as there were Ford Cortinas available in the form of 2- and 4-door sedans, 5-door wagons, 2-door pickups and 2-door convertibles (by conversion).
