Schaeffler, an automotive supplier that specializes in ball bearings, and Ford have created a technological concept called the Fiesta e-Wheel Drive that uses hub-mounted electric motors in each rear wheel. It will be on display at the Auto, Motor und Sport Congress in Stuttgart.

The electric motor, electronics, controller, brakes and liquid cooling system are installed in the wheel hub, and it requires wheels 16in or larger to fit. The batteries are stored under the hood where the batteries would usually be. Each unit produces a peak of 54hp or a constant 44hp and a total of 516lb-ft of torque. Each hub weighs 53kg (117lb), but Schaeffler estimates that a conventional wheel bearing and brake would weigh 45kg (99lb).
