Following the continuous enlargement of the first generation Mustangs until 1973, Ford decided to dramatically decrease its size to as close as possible to the original model. Thus, the second generation Mustang was launched in 1974.
Lee Iacocca, president of Ford at that time, thought that the original car had been replaced by a way too heavy and low-performance Mustang. Consequently, shape and styling, as well as the mechanical features, were all reformulated in order to give the car an appearance that was closer to the 1964 model but with a higher performance.
This model was also launched just two months before the first American “oil crisis” and in the end sales weren’t disappointing at all, at over 400.000 copies on the first year of production.
