The history of Isuzu begins in 1916 when the companies Tokyo Ishikawajima Shipbuilding and Engineering Co., and Tokyo Gas and Electric Industrial Co. started making plans to get into the automotive business. In 1922, as a result of technical development and with the cooperation from Wolseley Auto Motor Company, the first Wolseley model A-9 car is produced, followed by the CP truck just two years later.
In 1933 as a result of the merger between Ishikawajima Automotive Works and Dot Automobile Manufacturing Inc., the company changes its name to Automobile Industries Co., Ltd. Four years later yet another company is established based on Automobile Industries, the Tokyo Automobile Industries Co., Ltd. Renaiming the truck to Isuzu after the Isuzu River in 1934, originated the new company's name, the same we still know today and which would be adopted in 1949, "Isuzu Motors Limited".
The years that followed the Second World War would be of great demand, development and production as they were essential to the reconstruction of the country. That time determined the company's passion and dedication to the production of trucks which include the N-Series, the F-Series and the C&E-Series. Still, from 1953 to 1985 Isuzu launched a number of passenger vehicles that include the Hillman in 1953, the Bellett in 1963, the 117Coupe in 1968, the Piazza in 1981 and the FF Gemini in 1985.
Isuzu began exporting to Hong Kong in 1949, but it would be only after an affiliation agreement with General Motors in 1971 that Isuzu's expansion would begin. The company opened manufacturing plants or sales bases in Thailand, North America, China, Poland, Spain, Mexico as well as other countries.
Still one of the oldest japanese automotive companies, Isuzu is one the world's largest medium to heavy duty trucks manufacturer.
