Jaguar XK (United Kingdom, 1996-2006)

The first incarnation of the Jaguar XK series, better known as the X100 model, was publicly released in March 1996 at the Geneva Motor Show. This grand tourer was placed in the market as a replacement for the Jaguar XJS model and was largely based on Aston Martin’s model DB7, sharing the same platform with it.   The first generation XK had its assembly line at Jaguar’s facility in Coventry, England. Two variants of the 1st XK series were produced, based on the available engine options: the car launched in 1996 was the XK8 and it was joined, two years later, by the XKR.   These cars received some corrections for 2003 that were mainly focused on improving drivability, safety and comfort. Jaguar produced the first XK series until 2005, when a second generation model was introduced.

The X100 series Jaguar XK have a front engine, rear-wheel drive layout and is powered by a 4.0-liter V8 engine. There’s two available versions, however, of such engine: the naturally aspirated 290 hp XK8 and the supercharged 370 hp XKR variant. Both engines are electronically limited to allow the XK to achieve 155 mi/h (249 km/h) as top speed.   The XK series’ 2003 update brought a new engine to the range, which was a 4.2-liter V8 unit that produces 400 hp and allows for the XK to perform 0-60 mi/h in 5.2 seconds. The car’s top speed remained electronically limited at the same number. Five-speed manual and five- or six-speed automatic transmissions were available for the X100 series Jaguar XK.

The first Jaguar XK series model could be acquired both as a coupe and a convertible, which are both 2-door bodyworks. The X100 largely benefits from an aerodynamic styling. The XKR variant’s grille was given a small refreshment in 2004.
