Even with the Cheetah project representing a big failure for Lamborghini, they didn't quit and continued developing the project hoping to recover the initial investment. The second project was supported also by some Swiss banks. The LM 001 was a developed design of the Cheetah and used a Lamborghini 4.7-liter, V12 engine instead of the 5.9-liter V8 engine from AMC. That didn't solve the major design problem which was the rear mounted heavy engine. Because of this problem, when accelerating the grip for the front tyres used for steering was very limited, resulting a very innacurate car control.
