The Land Rover LR4 (Discovery outside the USA) is a mid-size SUV, with off-road capabilities and manufactured since 1989. At launch, the Land Rover Discovery was available in a three door version, in 1990 a five door version was added.
The second generation Discovery was introduced in 1998. It came with a reviewed interior and exterior, but it was still similar to the Series I.
In 2004 the Discovery 3 was released, marketed as LR3 in North America. An innovation of the new series was the new body construction method, called Integrated Body Frame (IBF), where the engine bay and passenger compartment is built as a monocoque, then mated to a basic ladder-frame chassis for the gearbox and suspension. The LR3 was also the first Land Rover with a rear locking differential.
The fourth generation was presented in 2009. The LR4 (Discovery 4 outside North America) is using the same Integrated Body Frame structure as the third generation. It features altered front and rear lights and a redesigned front grille and bumper in line with the new Land Rover design of 2010. For the 2011 model year the 2.7 engine was dropped and two versions of the 3.0 litre engine were added to the range - the TDV6 and the SDV6.
