Lincoln Motor Company was founded by Henry M. Leland, in Detroit, Michigan, in 1917, its purpose being the manufacture of aircraft engines. The Company was named after the former American President Abraham Lincoln. After WWI, Lincoln moved into luxury cars production. The first Lincoln automobile was presented to the public in 1920.

In 1922, severe financial losses led Lincoln to bankruptcy and subsequent purchase by Ford Motor Company. Ford soon introduced new body styles (such as the roadster and four-door sedans) and Lincoln rapidly became one of American's top selling high-quality, luxury automobiles. For a long time, and until 2004, Lincoln produced the official state limousines for the U.S. Presidents (since 2004 Cadillac has been the main supplier).
