The Lotus Elise is a compact and innovative sports car released in 1996. The Elise was named after Elisa, the granddaughter of Romano Artioli, Lotus chairman at the time.

The standard Lotus Elise of the first generation has a Rover K-series engine with 4 cylinders and 1796 cc. All this makes the car reach 202 km/h. The car has 118 hp and it goes from 0 to 100 km/h in six seconds. It has a manual 5 speed transaxle transmission.

Lotus main goal was to build a lightweight car with a good performance. The car weights 755 kg, it has 3726 mm of overall length, and it is 1701 mm wide and 1202 mm tall. Although it is heavier than originally planned, the Lotus Elise was one of the lightest sport cars at the time.
The focus on the car was the performance and the accessories were kept to a minimum. It came without airbags, ABS, electric windows, radio, adjustable steering, or spare wheel. However, Lotus Elise features many modern electronics that were new at the time of its launching. The result was a high-tech car with a relative affordable price for its segment.

The name that was given to this Lotus model derives from Romano Artioli’s granddaughter Elisa, as Artioli was the company’s chairman by that time.
