Société Anonyme Minerva Motors was founded by Sylvain de Jong (previously a successful motorcycles and motorcycle engines) in 1900 in Berchem, Antwerp, Belgium. Minerva’s were high quality, endurable, luxury cars that became very popular among the upper class. During WWI, the company kept in business producing cars that were used in hit and ran attacks against the German troops. After the war manufacture of luxury cars was resumed.
Similar to Rolls Royce but a little less expensive, Minerva’s became the favorite brand of film stars, politicians and even royalty both in Europe and USA. The great depression took its toll on the Company’s finances that forced Minerva to merge with Imperia (another automobile builder) in 1934. Minerva cars were built until 1938 and the company became defunct in 1956.
In 2013 the company was revived to produce the J.M. Brabazon supercar named after a racing car driver that used to drive Minerva cars.
