Lancer Evolution IV GSR (Japan, 1996)

A totally new platform that was given to the Mitsubishi Lancer in 1996 forced the Evolution series III to be replaced as well by the forth series Evo.
This Lancer model, which had become more and more popular over the past years, received slightly increased power for its forth edition. However, it was also a tad heavier than the earlier series; therefore a power increase was indispensable for compensating.

Similarly to the previous editions, the Evolution IV was produced in RS and GSR versions, completing a sum of 10.000 Evo IV cars built by January 1998.

The Lancer Evolution IV has a 2.0-liter Sirius front engine with twin scroll turbocharger.
The car produces 280 hp and is officially said to reach its top speed at 112 mi/h (180 km/h), whilst going from 0–60 mi/h (0–97 km/h) in 5.5 seconds. This shows an important decrease in performance in the forth series Lancer Evo.
The Evo IV has 4-wheel drive system and works through a 5-speed manual transmission.

Unitary steel   Platform Mitsubishi CN9A platform.   Suspension Front McPherson strut with telescopic shock absorbers and rear multi-link axle; front and rear coil springs and anti-roll bar.   Steering Power assisted rack-and-pinion steering.   Brakes Front vented discs with 4-pot callipers and rear vented discs with twin-pot callipers, powered with ABS on all wheels.

The 4-door sedan Evolution IV is most easily told apart from all other Evo series by the two large fog lights placed in the car’s front bumper, which were specially meant for better sight conditions in the snow and at night.
The 4th series Evo’s rear end was also significantly upgraded by receiving a totally new styling on its tail lights.
