Manufactured by Subaru since 1995, the Outback is a crossover developed by Subaru of America. It was created to recover the brand's slumping sales in the mid-1990s.

As Subaru lacked the funds to design an all-new model, the brand decided to add body cladding and a suspension lift to their Legacy wagon.

Named after the rugged areas of Australia, the Outback would be marketed as a vehicle as a capable and more efficient alternative to larger, truck-based SUVs.

All Outbacks sold worldwide are equipped with all wheel drive as standard equipment.
