The 340 Mexico was the successor of the successful 212 Export212 ExportFerrari 212 ExportItaly, 1952 > 19526 versions

, which triumphed in the Carrera Panamericana. The car was specially asked by Enzo Ferrari. Only four examples were built in all by Vignale: three Berlinettas and one Spider.

The car was fitted with a more geared-up fifth gear and the engine featured new cylinder heads with quadruple carburettors that further boosted the engine power to 280hp. The rear axle and transmission were also further strengthened.

Chinetti and Lucas went on to finish the Carrera Panamericana in third position.
